The California Bully Fire continued to rage across 12.6 square miles Tuesday, growing mostly east toward Ono and threatening almost 70 buildings as of Tuesday afternoon. The blaze forced the evacuation of 12 homes, caused 10 injuries and had destroyed 18 buildings in the area of Platina and Bland roads, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Firefighters have established containment lines around 20 percent of the fire. More than 2,200 firefighters are battling the blaze, which had burned 8,100 acres of grassy oak woodlands, thick brush and timber as of Tuesday evening, said Mary Aldrich, a Cal Fire spokeswoman. About 10 firefighters suffered injuries, including three Tuesday, said Cheryl Buliavac, with Cal Fire. She said all are in good condition. Most injuries were heat related or complaints of general illness, she said. The steep terrain is impeding firefighting efforts along the northern side of the fire, she said.

Platina Road remains closed between Bland Road and Graves Ranch Road. Evacuations are in place for Big Foot Road and Sunny Hill Road off of Rainbow Lake Road, while all other residents in that area have been told to prepare to evacuate.

Residents Linda Hall and Anthony Gambino learned of those evacuations during a quick trip to buy drinking water Monday. The couple, who live on Selvester Ranch Road, drove into Ono to buy water for themselves and their eight dogs. But when they returned, they found the road to their home closed and Shasta County Sheriff’s deputies who told them they couldn’t return because of mandatory road closures for the Bully Fire.
