A young couple is attempting to overcome stiff odds in New Jersey. Colin and Deborah McLaughlin chose to start a forestry business during an economic downturn. They chose the challenge of woodland management and logging, and they chose New Jersey, of all places, to make it happen. They realized quickly that they would need to diversify their business in order to survive. They provide a brush mowing service, firewood and pulpwood harvesting, and they specialize in Atlantic white cedar harvesting and restoration. They are learning as they go, thankful for helpful fellow loggers and companies that are willing to show them the way. Hurricane Sandy caused significant damage, causing them to have to shift their business services. Nevertheless, their company is one great example of the possibilities of young loggers with a vision.

Swedish logger Niklas Savilahti, owner of Savilahti Skog AB in Varnamo, Sweden, reports poor demand and looks to the U.S. to spur recovery. Neither the paper industry nor the housing markets are in good shape in Sweden, according to him. The current climate is not encouraging for young loggers. The biggest obstacle is a shrinking timber supply, and severe storms have caused rising costs.
