The Fremont-Winema National Forest has recently awarded seven timber sales and stewardship contracts.

In all, the sales call for timber harvests of 38.9 million board feet (MMBF) on four different ranger districts, including three on the Klamath, two on the Chemult and one each on the Bly and Silver Lake districts.

“It was really nothing out of normal,” said Judd Lehman, the Fremont-Winema’s timber program manager, noting the sales were part of fiscal year 2012 which totaled 61 MMBF, a slight increase over the 57 MMBF averaged over the last five years. Sales normally spread over the year happened toward the end of the 2012 fiscal year.

Lehman said some sales include a combination of saw timber, normally used for plywood veneer and lumber products, and green bio convertible products, which are generally defective logs or logs too small to be made into lumber products that are typically used as biomass. In cases of combination sales, he said the majority of the logs were saw timber.
